Installing ownCloud on a Cloud VPS

Many people utilize platforms like DropBox or Google Drive to store important files in the cloud and have them synced between devices. This valuable service comes with limitations, however, particularly if you don’t want to pay extra. Most restrict your storage space and hosting in a public cloud has its own security concerns.

An alternative is ownCloud, an open source option which you can install on your own web server. If you have Softaculous, you can install ownCloud with a script, but it’s possible to do manually if that’s up your alley.

1. Get the Web installer from ownCloud here and upload it to your server. Alternately, you can run the following command via SSH to download it directly to your server.


2. Using your web browser, visit the file on your server (usually at

3. Click the Next button. If your server has all the dependencies installed, it will proceed to the next section. If not, you can usually find the needed dependencies in the Exhaustive Options List in Easy Apache. Alternately, you can contact the MST to have them activate those options on your behalf.

4. You will be prompted for a directory to install ownCloud in. This can be a new directory. Once you click next, ownCloud will begin installing on your server.

5. Once it finishes installing, you will be taken to an account setup screen. Create a user name and password and click “Finish Setup”.

6. You will be taken to your new ownCloud administration panel. Congratulations!
