ServInt President Christian Dawson to Speak on Government Surveillance at SXSW Interactive

Reston, Va., March 12, 2015 – ServInt, a pioneering provider of managed cloud hosting for businesses worldwide, today announced its President Christian Dawson will be a featured speaker at the South By Southwest Interactive (SXSW) this weekend in Austin, Tex.

On March 14th at 3:30 p.m., Dawson and several other distinguished panelists will discuss “Government Surveillance: How You Can Change It” in Room 9ABC of the Austin Convention Center. The panel will examine the need for the technology community to advocate reform of U.S. government surveillance practices. Other panelists include: Harley Geiger, Senior Counsel & Advocacy Director for the Center for Democracy & Technology; Ellen Dargie, Counsel for U.S. Representative Darrell Issa; and Ben Young, Vice President, General Counsel of Peer 1 Hosting.

Dawson also is the co-founder and chairman of the Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2Coalition), the Internet infrastructure industry’s premiere trade association. In that role, he helps to direct efforts that protect Internet freedom and ensure that the Internet and the industry that builds it continue to survive and thrive.

ServInt has been one of the Internet industry’s most vocal critics of the U.S. government’s mass surveillance programs, and has called on legislators to help restore the image of the United States as a country that cares about privacy and the rule of law.

ServInt recently updated its Privacy Policy to narrow the circumstances in which law enforcement can request customer data from ServInt without a warrant. ServInt has announced it will disclose all requests for its customer data unless a specific statute requires the Company to keep the request secret.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to speak on this important panel,” Dawson said. “The Internet has been the ideal landscape for the practice of our basic human right to free expression. Part of ServInt’s corporate mission is to do everything we can to help ensure the Internet continues to be a place where this freedom is respected, now and forever.”

He concluded, “One of our immediate priorities is to raise awareness of Section 215 of the USA PATRIOT Act, which has been used to authorize the bulk collection of Internet data. That section is up for renewal on June 1, 2015 and we seek to enlist as many voices as possible in our effort to change or sunset that section – as we work to make sure this opportunity for surveillance reform is not squandered.”
