Editor’s note: Jelastic has become even more powerful since this article was written! Click here for more details.
With today’s full-production launch of Jelastic comes ServInt’s first Cloud PaaS solution. If you’ve been following us on the ServInt Source for a while, you’ll know that we did a five-part series on cloud technology last year and that we’ve recently been incorporating cloud technology into our Flex product line.
Some of you may be wondering, with all the opportunities in the market to capitalize on Cloud, why would ServInt turn to a Java cloud product?
It’s simple- at ServInt our motivation isn’t merely to capitalize on the latest trends, it’s to create powerful and usable products that our customers need and want. To that end we’ve been working with technology partners like Jelastic to develop smarter cloud products that harness the newest technologies to meet customer demands of performance and usability.
IaaS versus PaaS
One of the ways Jelastic achieves this mix of power and simplicity is that it is a PaaS solution in the Cloud. Jelastic has been designed and built on infrastructure specifically engineered for this particular purpose. Basically, Jelastic and ServInt have built a virtualized Java Platform (the “P” in PaaS) that allows end-users to stop worrying about the underlying hosting technology.
Simplicity is key in PaaS
Unlike other Java PaaS and IaaS options on the market, Jelastic does not require customers to code to any specific API—and Jelastic dynamically and instantaneously allocates resources for hosted applications, scaling servers up and down to make sure hosted apps have the resources they need, when they need them. Jelastic is also fully compatible with all major Java software stacks, including Tomcat, GlassFish, and Jetty application servers — as well as SQL (MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, CouchDB) databases.
Building this ease-of-use into Jelastic took a tremendous amount of work, but in the end, it simultaneously offers a powerful and flexible platform while making the lives of users easier. And that is the key to any successful product in today’s IT marketplace.
ServInt goes beyond PaaS
The PaaS model is becoming very attractive to many providers because it allows IT companies to provide a discrete service to a known type of user, giving providers the ability to tailor solutions to specific subsets of customers.
As cloud technologies mature, look to ServInt to continue to bring to market relevant solutions—including IaaS, PaaS and SaaS—that bring the power of the Cloud to the consumer in smart, simple ways.
